Water is one of the most important aspects of this mountain town. If the fountains have contributed to the residential tradition, the river has been fundamental in the location of the paper industry. The castle is the origin of the town, from where one can see many of the vineyards in the valley along the Anoia River and the old Via Augusta. It is an exceptional thousand-year-old testimony. Many people choose the town of Gelida for their summer holidays or as a place to have a second house. The land has many geographical accidents due to the presence of the Ordal massif, which gives it the image of a mountain town, as it is located to the side of the massif. Apart from the main town, which is characterized by the difference in the floor levels of the streets, Gelida is made up of the neighbourhoods of Sant Salvador de la Calçada, Les Cases Noves, El Puig and La Valenciana and the residential areas of Serralet and Els Tarongers, along with the houses of Martivell, El Safari and St. Salvador. The eastern side of the town has more geographical accidents due to the Ordal massif – which has a calcareous formation - and there are many natural fountains with good water quality. This much-appreciated water and its luxuriant forest have made Gelida very popular.

Gelida Castle:

First documented in the year 945 it belongs to the fortification line that controlled the Penedès region. The castle is located on a rocky spur bordered by the Cantillepa and Sant Miquel torrents and is made up of a group of monuments which allows us to track the history of the land during the last millennium. The castle towers and walls show us the many transformations and historical events that have affected them and enable us to know something of the life of our ancestors. The Sant Pere del Castell Church, mentioned for the first time in the year 998, was the parish church of Gelida until 1871. The building allows us to track both architectural history and the history of art down the years. From its origins, the surroundings of the church were devoted to the medieval cemetery. Archaeological research has discovered many anthropomorphical tombs from the 10th and 11th centuries.
The Interpretation Centre of the Gelida Castle is a place that offers information to visitors and has been built using the castle structure from the 14th century. It has two floors with an information point and a shop as well as a permanent exhibition about the history and significance of the castle.
The funicular:
Inaugurated in 1924 it is the work of Santiago Rubió i Tudurí. With a maximum gradient of 20% it covers a route of 806m, which are completed in 8 minutes.
