Pontons (Inhabitants 468).

The highest borough of L’Alt Penedès, at 632m. As is typical of mountain boroughs, the surrounding countryside has many crags and cliffs, quite distinct from the vineyards of the Penedès boroughs. Pontons is located at the northeastern limit of L’Alt Penedès and it is made up of the following towns: La Llacuna, Querol, Aiguamúrcia, Montmell i Torrelles de Foix. Solanes Peak (914m), Mas Fonoll (794m) and Les Roques del Pany (712m) are among the highest peaks of the region. Most of the land is forest. The economy is based on agriculture and summer tourism. There is a reference in a medieval document which dates from the year 996 that certifies the limits of the town at the end of the 10th century. The Pontons Castle became property of L’Infant Pere – son of Jaume I - in 1271. He later sold it to the Monastery of Santes Creus.

NOT TO BE MISSED:

Mas de Pontons:

Located near the north-eastern limit of the village. The building is still a fabulous example of the fortified rural houses from the 17th-18th centuries. On the top of each of the four arrises there is an outstanding sentry box and the wall has many loopholes – some of them with a keyhole shape - for the artillery.

Chapel of Sant Joan de la Muntanya:

One-nave building with vault and semicircular apse decorated on the exterior with arches and Lombard ornaments. The church is embedded on a rock spur. The Romanic chapel was consecrated in 1075.
