In the Alt Penedès region we do not have an emblematic place such as Montseny in the Vallès Oriental region or Sant Llorenç del Munt in the Occidental Vallès region, but we do have many natural spaces of outstanding beauty in the Prelitoral mountains, the coastal regions and on the plain.
The Prelitoral mountain range, which forms the regional border to the north, offers many attractive places to both visitor and trekker. The Castellar Peak, which is easily accessible, is the region’s highest point and has a panoramic view.
Between Font-Rubí and Mediona on the top of the crest, where the Bolet (Catalan mushroom) originates we find the old remains of the Font-Rubí Castle, and a cave with monoliths. One of the places with the the most spectacular scenery is the Foix Sanctuary, in Torrelles, beautifully restored in 1988. Located on top of a cliff it has an imposing silhouette. Visitors can get there easily, following a forest track which has been almost completely asphalted and which rises via the northern side. They can also walk by the River Foix, with its ponds, waterfalls and remains of old mills. The Chapel of Sant Joan de la Muntanya in Potons is similarly located and of equal interest. The borough of Pontons has many forests and fountains all over its lands, such as the fountains of Oriola, Els Igols o El Molinot. On top of a wild cliff are the remains of the Castellot Castle in Castellví, one of the Penedès region’s visual references. Visitors can go up and down via different tracks, following a difficult but thrilling circuit. A big rock marks the end of the narrow path along the Marmellar Brook (a dry riverbed). The path follows the course of the brook until the remains of the Marmellar Castle. The mountains have important forests, with white pine trees, and holm oaks – predominantly the trees found in the shade. Near Castellar there are also oak trees, artemisias and hollies. Although much of the forest was devastated by fire in 1986 but it is now recovering well. The presence of the well-known aromatic plains with rosemary and lavender offer visitors a memorably pleasant walk. The negative side is that most of these lands are not protected in any way.
On the contrary, most of the lands of the coastal mountain range which belong to the Penedès region are integrated into natural spaces protected by the Diputació de Barcelona. The natural park of Garraf includes part of the borough of Olesa de Bonesvalls. There is an information point in the town centre. Among the most interesting places we can mention is the Mola Peak, l’avenc de l’Esquerrà, the highest of the range at 206m, and the natural bridge of Arcada. In the northern part of Garraf, the Ordal massif also offers some great beauty spots in the boroughs of Subirats and Gelida: this latter is well known for its many fountains.
There is also the Olèrdola Park: it contains important architectural remains, the combination of architectural and natural heritage forming a stunning environment. Unfortunately part of the park was affected by fire in the summer of 2003.
Finally there is the Foix Park: it comprises the River Foix Reservoir, located in the borough of Castellet. Although the reservoir has an artificial origin, it is one of the few wetland areas of the Penedès region and has a peculiar naturalistic value. The castle is nearby, making the place even more unique. Very near, in Casteller town centre, is an information point about the Park with maps that show signposted paths and have many interesting suggestions as to activities.

The most outstanding feature of the plain, from the point of view of the non-architectural patrimony, is the image of well-kept gardens with perfectly aligned lines offered by vineyard cultivation. Nowadays, trained vines are substituting many traditional vineyards, but they are also very attractive, especially in July and August when the heat and the dry atmosphere make other plants less vigorous, while the vineyards retain their magnificence.
We also have to mention: the Pèlags of Vilobí, which constitute a valued, man-made wetland area, built on old quarries which are no longer active; and two natural places with similar names and features: Les Dous inTorrelles and Les Deus in Sant Quintí de Mediona, where visitors can admire rising springs which have been canalized by means of a line of small fountains. In Les Deus there are some caves which can also be visited, making for an additional attraction.
